Panel to Focus on Home Businesses

For many, running a successful home-based business can be a dream--no boss, no commute, no dress code. But the dream can quickly turn into a nightmare for those unaware of strategies for success, rules and regulations.
To address these issues, the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce has formed a new committee for home-based businesses.
“More people than ever are thinking about running their own business,” said Steve Rubenstein, president of the chamber. “Naturally, most of them start their business out of their homes.”
Rubenstein said the new committee has two goals: to inform owners of such businesses about regulations ranging from business licenses to taxes and insurance, and to build a healthy environment for home-based businesses by helping owners with sales, marketing and networking strategies.
Gary Koppenjan, communications manager for the chamber, said most home business operators are not familiar with the intricacies of the law.
“They have been employees most of their lives,” Koppenjan said. “They don’t realize employers have more responsibilities.”
The committee will help business owners avoid common marketing mistakes and provide a forum for them to meet and trade ideas, Koppenjan said.
The committee is headed by local accountant Susan Richman and will meet the fourth Thursday of every month at noon at the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, 625 W. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks.
The first meeting is scheduled for Jan. 25. For additional information, call 499-1993.
