Iverson Has 26 to Lead Cold-Shooting Hoyas

Georgetown shot less than 40% and was outrebounded. When you have Allen Iverson, though, it doesn’t matter.

The 6-foot Iverson scored 26 points, including a dunk on Notre Dame’s 6-11 center Matt Gotsch, to lead the No. 8 Hoyas to a 74-69 over the Irish on Monday night at South Bend, Ind.

The Irish (5-8) were led by Ryan Hoover’s 26 points but remained winless in six Big East games with their fourth consecutive loss.

“We did a better job in the second half defensively,” Georgetown Coach John Thompson said. “We tried to break them down by stepping up the pressure.”

The Hoyas shot only 39% and were outrebounded, 43-34. But Georgetown (15-4, 5-1) turned the ball over 13 times, five less than the Irish, and had three more steals (11).

No. 4 Kansas 85, St. Peter’s 71--Jacque Vaughn was benched for most of the first half after drawing his first college technical foul, but the Jayhawks (13-1) rallied with an 11-1 run before halftime and pulled away to defeat the Peacocks (9-4) in a nonconference game at Kansas.

Raef LaFrentz had 16 points for Kansas.

No. 11 Virginia Tech 79, George Washington 71--Ace Custis scored 18 points, including a key tip-in with 47 seconds left, and Travis Jackson tied his career high with 17 points to lead the Hokies (10-1, 3-0) to an Atlantic 10 Conference victory at Roanoke, Va.

George Washington (8-4, 2-1) led with seven minutes to play.

No. 6 Wake Forest 71, Richmond 60--The Demon Deacons (11-1) blew an 18-point lead before Tony Rutland scored all 13 of his points in the last 9:30 to defeat the Spiders (4-9) in a nonconference game at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tim Duncan had 16 points to lead Wake Forest.

No. 15 Utah 67, San Diego State 59--Brandon Jessie tied his career high with 28 points and the Utes (12-3, 4-1) overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the host Aztecs (8-5, 4-2) in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Coach Rick Majerus returned to the Utes after missing Saturday’s victory at Hawaii because of an inner-ear infection, driving from Salt Lake City to San Diego.

Tony Lane scored 14 of his 15 points in the final 8:15 as Nevada Las Vegas (6-7, 3-2) won, 64-55, over UC Santa Barbara (6-7, 3-2) in a Big West game at Las Vegas. . . . Jason Sutherland had five of Missouri’s season-high 10 three-point baskets in a 75-73 victory over Oklahoma (10-5, 2-1) in a Big Eight matchup at Missouri. Oklahoma’s Tyrone Foster, an 88.9% free-throw shooter, had a chance to send the game to overtime when he was fouled beyond the three-point line with three seconds to go, but he missed the second shot after Missouri (12-4, 2-0) called timeout. . . James Gray and Kendric Brooks each made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to give Fresno State (10-5, 4-1) a 73-67 victory at Air Force (4-10, 0-5) in WAC play. . . . Brian Green and Richard Brown scored 21 points each to lead Nevada (9-5 2-2) to a 75-55 victory over Pacific (6-8 2-4) in a Big West game at Reno. . . . Duane Rogers made two free throws with 19 seconds left in overtime to give Utah State (9-7, 3-1) a 60-58 victory over San Jose State (4-10, 3-3) in a Big West game at Logan, Utah. . . . LaDrell Whitehead made two free throws with five seconds left in overtime to lift Wyoming to a 72-68 victory over Texas-El Paso (10-5, 2-4) in a WAC game at Laramie, Wyo.

Michael Lloyd, the point guard who left Syracuse under a cloud of eligibility questions, has enrolled at Auburn-Montgomery and is awaiting clearance to play. . . . National Christian Coach J. Cesar Cervantes was hospitalized because of a head injury suffered in a bench-clearing brawl that erupted during Monday night’s game at Angelo State in San Angelo, Tex. Angelo State was declared the winner.
