Absences Prevent Council From Conducting Business

The Los Angeles City Council was unable to get a quorum Friday to conduct business.
Eight council members showed up, two short of the 10 needed. Four of the seven absences were officially excused in advance. Council members Jackie Goldberg, Mike Hernandez and Nate Holden are in Washington for a conference; Joel Wachs was excused for personal reasons.
Unexcused were Richard Alatorre, who was late returning from a funeral; Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was visiting Figueroa Street Elementary School teacher Alfredo Perez, who was shot at the school Thursday, and Marvin Braude, who was attending a meeting of the South Coast Air Quality Management District board.
The last time the council failed to reach a quorum was Nov. 17.
