Head of Getty Trust to Speak on Center’s Economic Impact

The Getty Center has yet to open its doors in the hills above Brentwood, but many scholars already are predicting that it will be a cultural landmark.

Today, the head of the J. Paul Getty Trust is scheduled to deliver a public address--not on the artistic components of the new complex, but on its economic impact on Brentwood and the Westside.

The 24-acre complex, on a ridge overlooking the San Diego Freeway, is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors annually when it opens in the fall of 1997. Local hotels, restaurants and other businesses expect to benefit.

The center will house exhibits now on display at the Getty Museum in Malibu and will have a 450-seat auditorium, cafe and art history center.

Howard Williams, president and chief executive officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust, will speak at 1 p.m. at the Summit Hotel, 11461 Sunset Blvd., following lunch at noon. The event, sponsored by the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, is open to the public. Lunch costs $25. Information: (310) 476-4573.
