School Marks Finish of Running Track

A school rally and an invitation-only luncheon are planned today to celebrate completion of a state-of-the-art running track in Moorpark.
The $100,000 all-weather track at the Moorpark Athletic Community Complex was completed about three weeks ago, just a few weeks after the end of the high school track season, said Bruce Thomas, president of the foundation that helped build the athletic complex and the track.
“We finished up right at the tail end of the season and we still had to make the final cleanup and touch-ups to the track,” he said.
The 400-meter track was financed with help from the local school district and donations. So far, Thomas said, the foundation has raised about $50,000 from local corporate sponsors, such as Chuy’s restaurant, Kavlico and Bank of America. The Moorpark High School Associated Student Body donated $10,000, Thomas said.
The track completes a 6,000-seat stadium complex that has cost more than $1 million, he said. Representatives from the foundation have further plans for the facility, such as adding an Olympic-sized pool and diving center.
Today’s celebration begins at 10 a.m. with a rally at the stadium, which will be followed by a luncheon for sponsors and local boosters at 11:30 at the Moorpark High School library.
