Christie Continues to Play Hard to Get

Linford Christie was chosen for the British Olympic team Monday, but the 36-year-old sprinter still hasn’t confirmed whether he will defend his 100-meter title in Atlanta.

He won the 100 in the British trials, and finished in a dead heat in the 200 with John Regis, but has refused to commit to the Olympics.

Jonathan Edwards, the world record-holder in the triple jump, was missing from the British team. He sat out the Olympic trials because of an injury, but is expected to make the team.

The Atlanta City Council approved a temporary hike in local taxi fares because of the Olympics. Taxi rides within downtown will jump to $8 from $5 per person. And taxi rides from the airport to downtown will cost $25, an increase from $18 per person.

A U.S. boxing team, featuring six fighters who will compete in next month’s games, defeated a Russian squad with no Olympic fighters, 8-4, in an exhibition match at Miami. The Olympians were led by light-heavyweight Antonio Tarver, who overcame a first-round knockdown to defeat Igor Dzagoev, 31-11. Other Olympians in action were light-flyweight Albert Guardado, featherweight Floyd Mayweather, light-welterweight David Diaz, light-middleweight David Reid and heavyweight Nate Jones. All won except Jones.
