ROCKS AROUND THE WORLD by Stefan Glowacz & Uli Wiesmeier (Sierra Club Books: $25; 144 pp.). A champion rock climber, Glowacz specializes in “sport” or “clean” climbing, using minimal equipment to ascend steep scarps. He traveled through France, England, Australia, Japan and the United States, finding finger- and toeholds in seemingly featureless slabs of rock. Wiesmeier’s photographs of Glowacz stretching like an insect over sheer cliffs are both thrilling and frightening.
