Malin Moves On in Two Events

Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced in the singles and doubles competition of the United States Tennis Assn. men’s 45 hardcourt championships at the Westlake Tennis & Swim Club on Friday with quarterfinal victories.
Malin defeated Steven Cornell of Oakland, 6-3, 6-1, and will play Peter Bronson of Scottsdale, Ariz., in a semifinal at 10:30 a.m. today.
Malin and Bronson will face each other again in a doubles semifinal at 3:30.
Malin and Tom Leonard of South Pasadena beat Wesley Jackson of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jim Quenzler of Scottsdale, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, in one quarterfinal.
Bronson and Brian Cheney of Chandler, Ariz., beat Steven Cornell and his brother Ron, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), in another.
