Disabled List Claims Dunston, Williams

San Francisco Giant shortstop Shawon Dunston, with two bones in his face broken in a collision Sunday, was put on the 15-day disabled list, along with All-Star third baseman Matt Williams.
Dunston spent Sunday night in a Houston hospital after his left eye orbit and cheekbone were broken while he slid into second base and collided with Astro shortstop Ricky Gutierrez.
Williams, who originally jammed his right shoulder trying to break up a double play in Colorado on July 16, has been playing first base in 12 of the last 15 games because of physical limitations.
The Giants also activated outfielder Glenallen Hill from the 60-day disabled list, recalled infielder Bill Mueller from triple-A Phoenix and transferred outfielder Stan Javier from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
San Francisco has used the disabled list a franchise record 18 times, with 13 different players being put on the list.

The Seattle Mariners said designated hitter Edgar Martinez will sit out two more weeks because of multiple stress fractures in his ribs.
He was eligible to come off the disabled list today.
Martinez was initially diagnosed with bruised ribs after a collision with Mariner catcher John Marzano in a July 20 game with the Angels. A bone scan later revealed stress fractures in four of his ribs.

Brian Anderson, who became the first Cleveland Indian left-hander to win in a game in more than a year on Sunday, was optioned to triple-A Buffalo.
To replace Anderson, the Indians recalled right-hander Julian Tavarez from the Bisons.
Cleveland Manager Mike Hargrove said Tavarez will be in long relief but might be used as a spot starter.

San Diego Padre outfielder Tony Gwynn might rejoin the team this weekend after sitting out more than a month because of a slightly torn right Achilles’ tendon.
Gwynn could return to the lineup during the Padres’ four-game series against the Pirates, which begins Thursday in Pittsburgh, a team spokeswoman said.
