A woman struck and killed on the Ventura Freeway in Tarzana early Sunday morning has been identified as a 38-year-old West Covina resident, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said Tuesday.
Mary Virginia Stremple was walking in the freeway’s eastbound lanes near Reseda Boulevard at about 5:54 a.m. when she was struck by an oncoming truck. The truck driver was not injured.
CHP officials on Tuesday declined to release details regarding Stremple’s death or an explanation for why she was wandering on the freeway, saying only that the accident remains under investigation.
Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the coroner’s office, said Stremple’s body was examined Tuesday morning but the cause of death will not be officially determined until toxicology tests are completed.
“We’d like to screen for drugs and alcohol,” he said.
CHP Officer Dena Yates said investigators are confident, however, that Stremple’s death was not a suicide. “It was just an accident,” she said.
