Baker, Cain Gain State Recognition

Basketball players Matt Baker of Burbank High and Terrance Cain of Monroe are among 22 high school athletes who will be honored Thursday in Sacramento by the California Legislature as part of California Interscholastic Federation ARCO awards day.
Baker, Southern Section male student-athlete of the year, and Cain, City Section male student-athlete of the year, each will receive a $2,000 scholarship from ARCO.
Baker, an All-Foothill League forward and straight-A student, will attend Harvard.
Cain, who carried a 4.1 grade-point average at Monroe, will attend Columbia.

Marty Wilson, assistant coach at the University of San Diego and former Pepperdine player and coach, will conduct a free basketball camp today and Thursday at Maclay Middle School in Pacoima. The camp for youth players will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

The American Roundball Corp. Razorbacks of North Hollywood lost to the 4D Stars of Torrance, 42-38, Saturday in the 11-year-old boys’ final at the Amateur Athletics Union National Championships in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Baseball
West Hills won the Pinto Division World Series for Southern California area teams with a 6-5 victory over Montebello. Matt Alarcon hit a three-run home run. In an earlier game, Tyler Kolodny hit a three-run homer to help defeat Newhall, 8-6.
Softball
The 18-and-under Southern California Stealth Gold finished ninth in a 37-team national tournament Sunday in Stockton.
The Stealth Gold was eliminated from the elite Amateur Softball Assn. tournament by Texas Force, whose pitcher was Olympic gold-medal winner Krista Williams.
The Northridge Softball League has scheduled signups for Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Northridge Little League complex.

Golf
Linda Pearson, of La Canada Country Club, finished in a three-way tie for second place at the 95th Women’s Southern California Golf Assn. Championship at Saticoy Country Club.
Valencia’s Brandon Christianson shot a 37 through nine holes and took second place in the Southern California PGA Junior Golf Assn. tournament at Palos Verdes Country Club.
Kyle Thurston of Moorpark finished third with a 39.
