Khmer Dissident to Seek End to War

Dissident Khmer Rouge leader Ieng Sary said he will seek an end to civil war now that he has broken with Pol Pot and other hard-liners of the guerrilla group that is estimated to have killed as many as 2 million Cambodians. Sary said his new group, the Democratic National United Movement, will work toward ending the bloodshed and reconciling with the Cambodian government. “We believe that our country will be reduced to nothing if the Khmer people continue to fight against each other indefinitely,” Sary said in a statement. Sary was sentenced to death in absentia for his involvement in the genocide during the 1970s and ‘80s; he has denied the charges.
