OUTLOOK
The Vanguards will be young, inexperienced and enthusiastic. Howard said they will need key contributions from members of last season’s JV team, which finished 8-1, if the Vanguards expect to challenge for a playoff berth. Second-team all-league offensive lineman Jorden, quarterback Vasquez, linebacker Walters and safety Salceda are the only returning starters. “Our defensive scheme will be simple and aggressive,” Howard said. The offense could have a bruising running game because the two fullbacks--Cervantes and Saucedo--also play offensive line. “We can give the ball to a converted linebacker [Williams] running behind a 290-pound fullback.” Howard said.
