Pacifica came from a fourth-place finish a year ago to finish the league season undefeated and break Los Amigos’ and Rancho Alamitos’ stranglehold on the top spots in the Garden Grove. The Mariners’ only blemish was a 28-28 tie to Rancho Alamitos in the second game of league play. The Mariners were led by all-league quarterback J.D. Stern, who passed for 1,818 and 14 touchdowns. Senior Chase Hamm rushed for 588 yards and junior Verdell LeVeaux ran for 439 yards. Pacifica was knocked out of the Southern Section Division VII playoffs in the first round by Redondo Beach Redondo Union, 29-20. Los Amigos took second in league and reached the Division VII semifinals by defeating Santa Maria Righetti, 24-21, and South Hills, 24-21. The Lobos were trounced by Lompoc, 46-6, in the semifinals. Los Amigos was led by senior tailback Greg Fausto, who ran for 1,414 yards and 18 touchdowns. Quarterback Jake Sanchez threw for 1,212 yards and eight touchdowns. Rancho Alamitos finished third and lost to Lompoc, 31-14 in the first round. Junior tailback Leo Kosi led the Vaqueros 1,668 yards, the fourth highest total in the county. Kosi also scored 21 touchdowns and finished tied for fifth in the county in scoring with 126 points.
