Hoyer-Larsen Wins in Badminton

Olympic gold medalist Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen of Denmark advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Badminton Championships with a 15-11, 15-1 victory over Canada’s Mike Beres Wednesday at the Orange County Badminton Club.
Also advancing to the men’s quarterfinals was top-seeded Joko Suprianto (Indonesia), who defeated Russia’s Andreji Andropov, 15-3, 15-7.
Kevin Han (Colorado Springs) lost his round-of-16 match to Malaysia’s Ong Ewe Hock, 12-15, 15-9, 15-4.
In the opening round of mixed doubles, Anaheim’s Kampol Surapiboonchai and Cathy Urwin were defeated by Jamaica’s Paul and Christine Leyow, 15-2, 15-2.
Also losing in the first round was Orange’s Ignatius Rusli and partner Cindy Shi from China, 15-7, 15-8. Rusli and Shi were defeated by Canada’s Darryl Yung and Denyse Julien.
