FULLERTON — Fullerton running back Chad Staffieri rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns as the Indians delighted their homecoming crowd Friday night by defeating Cerritos Gahr, 24-7, in a nonleague game in front of 1,000.
On Fullerton’s second play from scrimmage, Staffieri raced 15 yards for a touchdown and the Indians took a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter after a fumble recovery by Indian defensive tackle Art Arevalo, Fullerton (3-2) increased its lead to 14-0 when Bill Gonzales scored from one yard. Jeff Cody added a 33-yard field goal as time ran out in the second quarter and the Indians took a 17-0 lead at the half.
Fullerton linebacker, Michael Sailhamer recovered a Gahr (0-5) fumble at the Fullerton seven-yard line, setting the stage for Staffieri’s 93-yard touchdown run and an Indian 24-0 lead.
Early in the third quarter Fullerton quarterback Justin Bruce was injured as he attempted a pass. Bruce, as a precautionary measure, was taken to St. Jude’s Hospital in Fullerton for neck X-rays.
“We believe he suffered a whiplash and maybe a concussion when his head hit the ground,” said Robin Walker, Fullerton’s team trainer. “He’ll be sore tomorrow, but we expect him to be OK.”
