Lawmaker Charged for Firing Warning Shot

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah legislator was charged with a weapons violation Tuesday for firing a warning shot to stop two men he suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run car accident.
State Rep. David Bresnahan, a Republican, could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of unlawfully firing his handgun in a public place.
He could also be reprimanded, censured or expelled from the Legislature if fellow lawmakers determine the crime is one of moral turpitude.
Bresnahan maintained Tuesday that the charges were politically motivated.
