Free-agent point guard Tony Smith, who played for Phoenix and Miami last season and spent five seasons early in his career with the Lakers, signed a contract with the Charlotte Hornets. . . . Nike is interested in owning the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche by buying Comsat Corp.’s 80.7% interest in Ascent Entertainment Group, which owns both, according to KCNC-TV in Denver.
