From Times Wire Reports
Artwork and other items looted by the Nazis from Jewish homes more than 50 years ago and long held by Austria sold for high prices at a benefit auction. The auction grossed $13.2 million during its first day--nearly four times the $3.5-million estimate by Christie’s auctioneers for the full two-day sale. Proceeds from the auction, conducted by Christie’s on behalf of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Austria, will aid needy Holocaust survivors and their heirs.
