Gasparian Gains 300th Victory

Golden West women’s volleyball Coach Albert Gasparian recorded his 300th career victory Wednesday night when the Rustlers defeated Rancho Santiago, 15-1, 15-4, 15-2, in an Orange Empire Conference match.
Gasparian, in his 14th year, improved his record to 300-35. In Gasparian’s career, the Rustlers have won seven state championships and 12 conference titles.
Wednesday’s victory extends the team’s national community college record of 120 consecutive conference victories, 10 straight years without a loss.
The top-ranked Rustlers (15-0, 6-0) will face third-ranked Fullerton Friday night.
In other conference matches:
Fullerton 3, Cypress 0--Michelle Halliday had eight kills and Christy Deming had 35 assists for visiting Fullerton (9-2, 5-1), which won, 15-7, 15-1, 15-10. Cypress is 6-7, 1-5.
Saddleback 3, Orange Coast 1--Christine Howard had 31 kills and 12 digs and Whitney Uhl had 20 kills for visiting Saddleback (7-4, 4-2), which won, 8-15, 16-14, 15-12, 18-16. Jennifer Fish had 19 kills for Orange Coast (7-6, 2-4).
In South Coast Conference wrestling:
Golden West 22, Rancho Santaigo 19--Defending state champion Tito Ortiz beat former Saddleback High standout Jim Ambriz in the last match to give Golden West the victory. Ortiz, formerly of Huntington Beach High, beat Ambriz, 10-0. Golden West remains in the conference lead at 3-1. Rancho Santiago is 2-2.
