New Mexico Upends No. 11 Arizona, 84-77

Clayton Shields and David Gibson made the crucial second-half baskets as No. 19 New Mexico held off a string of rallies by No. 11 Arizona for an 84-77 victory Saturday night at Albuquerque.

New Mexico (5-0) sealed the win by converting eight free throws in the game’s final 87 seconds, six of them by reserve guard Royce Olney.

Arizona (2-1) rallied from a 42-32 halftime deficit behind sophomore forward A.J. Bramlett’s 16 second-half points and its board work. The Wildcats finished with 24 offensive rebounds.

Bramlett, who sat out most of the first half after picking up two fouls in the first 3 1/2 minutes, made all eight shots he took in the second half and, along with Michael Dickerson, led the Wildcats’ second-half comeback.

No. 1 Cincinnati 105, Rutgers 65--Rebounding from a two-point loss to Xavier on Tuesday, the Bearcats (2-1) built an 18-point first half lead behind the scoring of Danny Fortson and Damon Flint to defeat Rutgers (1-1) at Cincinnati.

Flint scored nine points and Fortson seven in the first half as the Bearcats, breaking from a 7-7 tie, held a 45-27 halftime lead. Fortson finished with 24 points and eight rebounds, and Flint added 19 points.

No. 5 Villanova 62, Butler 54--Alvin Williams scored 17 points and Chuck Kornegay added nine points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats (2-0) won in the Puerto Rico Shootout at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Villanova led, 48-39, with 7:47 to play after holding Butler (2-1) scoreless for four minutes. The Bulldogs did close within 52-50 with 3:16 left, but Villanova was able to pull away.

No. 7 Michigan 80, Cleveland State 74--Louis Bullock had 19 points and Maurice Taylor added 17 as the Wolverines (2-0) escaped with a win at Cleveland.

Taylor scored inside to give Michigan a 76-71 lead with 1:35 left. After a Cleveland State (1-2) miss, Michigan guard Brandun Hughes fell down along the baseline, and Malcolm Sims picked up the loose ball, stepped behind the three-point line and made the shot to cut the lead to 76-74 with 41 seconds remaining.

Despite making only six of their last 13 foul shots, Michigan clinched the victory when Maceo Baston made two free throws with 11 seconds left.

No. 8 Kentucky 92, College of Charleston 65--Ron Mercer scored 22 points and the Wildcats (3-1) shot 64% from the field in the Great Alaska Shootout championship game at Anchorage.

The Wildcats never gave the Cougars (3-1) a glimpse of hope, taking the lead for good 2 1/2 minutes into the game,

Allen Edwards added 17 points and Nazr Mohammed had six rebounds for the defending national champions.

No. 10 Clemson 47, Missouri 45--Terrell McIntyre’s three-point basket with four seconds to play gave the Tigers a victory in the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Clemson (4-0) held a 41-35 lead with 6:58 to play when Missouri (2-1) went on a 7-3 run to pull within two points with 2:22 remaining. Derek Grimm’s three-pointer with 1:27 remaining gave Missouri a one-point lead. But McIntyre made his game-winning shot.

No. 12 Syracuse 73, North Carolina-Greensboro 56--Todd Burgan and Jason Cipolla each scored 16 points as the Orangemen (3-1) took fourth place in the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

North Carolina-Greensboro falls to 1-3.

No. 15 Fresno State 84, Liberty 44--Dominick Young had three three-point baskets during an 18-point run by Fresno State (4-0) against Liberty (3-1) in the championship game of the Coors Light Classic at Fresno.

No. 16 Arkansas 77, San Francisco 63--Guy Whitney scored six points in a row and Derek Hood contributed a couple of dunks during a 14-3 run that helped the Razorbacks win at home.

Arkansas (2-1) led, 38-35, when the spurt began early in the second half. The run ended with 12:55 to play and the Dons (1-1) never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

No. 21 Stanford 91, Alaska Anchorage 69--Ryan Mendez and Tim Young each scored 17 points to lead the Cardinal in the third-place game of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Brevin Knight added 16 points for Stanford (2-1) and set a tournament record with 13 assists, tying his career best.

Rick Stafford had 20 points and 11 rebounds for tournament host Alaska Anchorage (5-2).

No. 24 Minnesota 64, Creighton 63--Eric Harris’ jump shot with four seconds to play gave the Golden Gophers a berth in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Sam Jacobson led Minnesota (4-0) with 17 points, while John Thomas had 15 and Harris 12.

Randall Crutcher led Creighton (2-2) with 19 points.

Texas Tech 84, No. 25 George Washington 75--Tony Battie, Texas Tech’s only returning starter from last season’s Sweet Sixteen team, scored 12 of his 17 points in 15-6 run to start the second half as the Red Raiders (3-0) upset the host Colonials (3-1).

The defeat ended a 14-game home winning streak for George Washington.
