The L.A. Auto Show’s Latest Incarnation

The Chrysler Sidewinder, a truck-sports car combination, and the full-size Lincoln Sentinel Ghia, which utilizes Ford’s “new edge design,” are among the futuristic models that are sure to be popular attractions for attendees to the L.A. Auto Show.
Other highlights of the show, at the L.A. Convention Center from Saturday through Jan. 12, include more than 1,000 new vehicles for 1997 and previews of 1998 autos, including the Kia Sportage two-door convertible and Mercedes-Benz SLK.
Also, booths of accessories (car stereos, seat covers, etc.), clothing and car care products will fill another corner of the convention center.
And, in honor of its 50th anniversary, Road & Track magazine will unveil its traveling art exhibit.
Two supervised children’s areas are available, offering videos, toys and games to keep youngsters ages 3-12 occupied for a couple of hours (no fee).
The public can get a sneak preview of the autos at a benefit for Homeless Healthcare Los Angeles and Comic Relief on Friday, 7-11 p.m., $50 (includes dinner from Tommy Tang’s; live music).
Auto Show hours are Saturdays, 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; weekdays, 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m., at the L.A. Convention Center, 1201 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. Parking, $6. Admission: $6; seniors, $4 (weekdays only); ages 12 and younger, free. (213) 741-1151.
