Franciscan Agency Seeking New Home

A 25-year-old Franciscan social services agency for the poor and homeless in South Park is searching for a new home.

The St. Francis Center’s lease runs out Jan. 31 on the property adjacent to St. Joseph Church at 12th and Los Angeles streets, where the nonprofit charity has been located since 1972.

The property, as well as the adjoining church, is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, church officials said. Officials of the social services agency said the archdiocese plans to develop the property; an archdiocese spokesman said he was unaware of such plans.

The center’s staff members say they are searching for a new, bigger space in the same neighborhood so they can continue to serve their community, made up of the homeless as well as garment workers and their families.
