Calvary Chapel Gets Some Middle Relief

Calvary Chapel won five consecutive matches in the middle weights to overcome some early defeats and beat Temecula Valley, 37-23, in wrestling Tuesday at Temecula Valley High.
Calvary Chapel’s Tino Archuleta, who is ranked second in the state at 125, had the closest match of the meet, beating David Flores, 2-1, with a takedown in the last 20 seconds.
The Eagles are 2-0. Temecula Valley (12-1), ranked first in Southern Section Division II, was handed its first loss of the season.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 36, Los Amigos 33--With the victory, Pacifica (2-0) posted its first wrestling victory over Los Amigos.
Santiago 53, Garden Grove 17--Jorge Guzman won by pin in 2:15 at 140 pounds for visiting Santiago (20-1, 2-0), ranked eighth in the county and No. 1 in Division IV.
In Academy League boys’ basketball:
Capistrano Valley Christian 57, St. Margaret’s 49--Josh Del Pino had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Alex Huff scored 13 points for St. Margaret’s (5-8, 1-1). Tim Baker scored 20 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (10-6, 2-0).
Orangewood Academy 59, St. Michael’s 52--Joey Oswald scored 15 points and Nicholas Wolfsen had 13 points and 18 rebounds for Orangewood Academy (8-4, 2-0).
In the Olympic League:
Brethren Christian 52, Orange Lutheran 43--Duane Hundley scored 14 points for Brethren Christian (8-9, 1-1), which outscored Orange Lutheran, 29-16, in the second half. Dan Martinez scored 14 points for Orange Lutheran (5-8, 1-1).
Whittier Christian 57, Cerritos Valley Christian 53 (OT)--Jon Stoa scored 19 points and Randy Snyder added 18 for the visiting Heralds (8-9, 2-0).
In the Freeway League girls’ soccer:
Sunny Hills 3, Sonora 2 (OT)--Sunny Hills’ Jill Wilson tied the score on a penalty-kick goal with three minutes remaining, then teammate Katie Morgan won the game in overtime off a cross from Megan Bagdonas. Katie Robinson and Tina Fodor scored goals for Sonora (6-6-1, 0-1-1).
Troy 1, Fullerton 0--Erin Christiansen, who was assisted by Ginny Everett, scored on a cross shot inside the box. Troy is 9-3-3.
In the Sea View League:
Irvine 1, El Toro 1--Stephanie Baldwin gave Irvine (7-5-4, 0-0-2) the early lead with a first half goal off an assist from Jennifer Meyerson. Jamie Doddridge tied the score for El Toro (9-4-3, 1-0-1) in the second half off an assist from Lauren Orlandos.
Santa Margarita 6, Corona del Mar 1--Brooke Smith scored two for third-ranked Santa Margarita (7-1-1, 2-0).
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 8, San Clemente 1--Erin Lowery had two goals for fifth-ranked Mission Viejo (12-3-2, 1-1).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 2, Edison 1 (OT)--Kim Gallo scored 1 1/2 minutes into overtime for sixth-ranked Esperanza (12-4-1, 1-1). Stacy Jarne scored the Aztecs’ first goal.
Los Alamitos 2, Fountain Valley 0--Kara Morris and Niki Szlak scored first-half goals and Jenny Willemse posted her 11th shutout for host Los Alamitos (12-3-2, 2-0), ranked fourth in the county.
Marina 3, Huntington Beach 2 (OT)--Ann Giallonardo scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first half of overtime for visiting Marina (9-4-1, 2-0). Marina led at halftime, 2-1, but Katie Wilson scored the tying goal late in the second half for Huntington Beach (4-6-2, 0-2).
After Wilson’s tying goal, the Oilers had a chance to win in regulation but Marina goalie Melissa Ullrich made a save on Renee Luth’s penalty kick to help send the game into overtime.
In Golden West League girls’ water polo:
Esperanza 6, Edison 2--Caroline Guidi scored two goals to lead Esperanza (6-5, 2-1) in the upset over 10th-ranked Edison (7-6, 1-2).
