A look at some the region’s top performers
Scoring sacrifice
Bell-Jeff guard Ruben Douglas, right, the second-leading scorer in the region with a 24.8 average, had only seven points while being double- and trible-teamed last week during a 63-43 Santa Fe League victory over Murphy.
But Douglas found other ways to contribute, pulling down 14 rebounds to go along with six assists and eight steals.
“He played a heck of a game,” Guard Coach Eli Essa said. “He sacrificed his scoring average for the team.”
Kent Dennis, average 15.4 points, played a similar game. He scored just nine, but had six assists.
Taking up the scoring slack was center Mike West with 18, well above his average of 11.3.
“We know teams are going to double- and triple-team [Douglas and Dennis] every game,” Essa said. “If they can continue to get other guys involved, we’re going to be tough to stop.”
