Ebonics

All the controversy over Ebonics reminds me of a survey that was conducted a few years back. Individuals who were not hired following a job interview were asked why they thought they had been rejected. All of the jobs were at management level.
Young people believed that the companies had probably been looking for employees with more experience. Older individuals were convinced that “young blood” was wanted. Minorities felt certain that the firms desired to hire only whites, while some white people believed that an ethnic mix was wanted. Women thought that, perhaps, only males were hired.
When the employers were asked why these job applicants had been rejected, the most frequent answer given was that they had “poor grammar.”
