Project Caring, sponsored by Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles, needs small groups of volunteers to adopt a nursing home in their neighborhood, visit monthly and bring programs of Jewish culture and holiday celebrations to residents. Jewish Elder-Care Corps, a separate program also sponsored by Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles, needs volunteers to work one on one with nursing-home residents. Over the Rainbow, a community-based group geared toward restoring and preserving historic buildings in and around Hollywood, needs volunteers to help in street cleanups, boarding up abandoned buildings and other projects. The environmental group Heal the Bay is holding a volunteer orientation at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 and a training session for its speakers’ bureau Feb. 6 (the first of four required sessions) from 7 to 9 p.m. Both activities will take place at the Heal the Bay office, 2701 Ocean Park Blvd., Suite 150, Santa Monica. Training for volunteer community food safety educators is being offered by the University of California Cooperative Extension program in four sessions. Volunteers will educate people on the dangers of food-borne illnesses in children. Training will take place at the Los Angeles County Cooperative Extension Office, 2 Coral Circle, Monterey Park, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 18, 21, 25, and 28.
