Glendale Federal Bank is set to open its case in federal court Monday seeking to win back $1.4 billion the thrift says it lost when the government in 1989 disallowed the use of “regulatory goodwill.” The GlenFed case is the first to go before U.S. Federal Claims Court Chief Judge Lauren Smith and is expected to set the stage for future cases brought by similarly affected thrifts. In July, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the government breached its agreement with the industry and was liable for damages. . . . Joan McCaw, president of Los Angeles magazine since 1994, announced that she will leave the publication April 1, citing the decision placing the magazine under the management of Fairchild Publications.
