May, Fassel to Be Inducted Into Community College Hall

Darlene May, a pioneer in women’s sports during her 25 years as a player, coach and referee, and Jim Fassel, who recently was named coach of the New York Giants, have been selected to the California Community College Sports Hall of Fame.

The 1997 class will be inducted April 17 at the Irvine Hilton.

May, who died of cancer in November, was an all-state selection in basketball and softball at Fullerton College and played those sports plus volleyball at Cal State Fullerton. She served as basketball coach at Connelly High, Mt. San Antonio College and Cal Poly Pomona, where she won three NCAA championships and two coach of the year awards.

Fassel played football for Anaheim High, Fullerton College, USC and Long Beach State, but his greatest success has been as a quarterbacks coach. He coached John Elway at Stanford and Jeff Hostetler, Boomer Esiason and Kent Graham during stints as an NFL assistant coach before accepting the Giants’ offer in January.

Other members of the induction class include Jackie Robinson’s brother, Mack Robinson (track and field, Pasadena City College), Lester Conner (basketball, Los Medanos and Chabot colleges), Coach/administrator Bill Wilson (football and track and field, Porterville and Vallejo colleges) and Coach Joe Marvin (football and track and field, Cabrillo College).

The Galaxy will play an exhibition against Cal State Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Titan Stadium.

Tim Odle is the new soccer coach at Concordia University, the school announced Wednesday.

Odle was an assistant last season to Dave Irby, who left to take a coaching job in Oregon.

Odle also has been a soccer coach at Southern California Christian High.

Concordia was 3-14-2 last season.
