The Cypress Pops Orchestra begins a free series on May 16 with a short piece commissioned from Long Beach composer Michael Harrison. Conductor John E. Hall, who founded the group in 1989, will lead the orchestra in Harrison’s “Dedication” at 8 p.m. in Grace Church auditorium, 5100 Cerritos Ave., Cypress. The program also will include works by Berlioz, Borodin, Strauss and other composers. The season will continue on July 12 and Aug. 16, both at 6 p.m., at Cypress Civic Center Green, 5275 Orange Ave. The series will end on Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. back at Grace Church auditorium. The 1997-98 North Orange County Community Concerts Assn. opens Oct. 16 with a recital by guitarist Terrence Farrell. The series will continue Jan. 23 with pianist Gabriela Imreh; Feb. 9 with the Latin American music group, Khenany; and April 29 with soprano Sherry Overholt and baritone Lee Velta. All programs will be at 8 p.m. in the Fullerton First United Methodist Church, 114 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton. Admission is by membership only, but memberships, ranging from $15 to $85, can be bought at the door. Membership includes reciprocity privileges with other community concert associations.
