College to Break Ground for Building

Faced with growing enrollment and limited class space, Moorpark College officials will break ground Friday for construction of a $5.1-million math and science building.
The 27,000-square-foot facility, expected to take 18 months to build, will allow the school to bring together in one site math, engineering and computer science classes now scattered across the campus.
Early designs for the Moorpark College campus included the building, but community college district officials cut it from the school’s master plan in 1965 because they doubted enrollment would ever climb high enough to justify construction.
The school, which opened 30 years ago with 1,500 students, now has 12,000.
The new facility will rise on the site of the current Student Services building, which will be demolished after the groundbreaking ceremony.
