Inmate Serving Time for Auto Theft Flees Jail Work Crew Site

A man serving a one-year auto theft sentence escaped from a work crew site about noon Friday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Manuel Hernandez, 19, had been assigned to work at the sheriff’s training facility at 1900 W. Katella Ave. He was a minimum-security inmate scheduled for release from the James A. Musick Branch Jail on Oct. 4.

The Anaheim man now faces additional charges of escape, Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson said.

A crew supervisor reported Hernandez missing but did not see him flee, officials said.
