Activist Rabbi Retires as University Hillel Leader

Rabbi Jerrold Goldstein says he’s not one to sit behind the table.

When recruiting for Hillel members at Cal State Northridge each September, Goldstein taps the shoulders of freshmen on the registration line and asks them if they are interested in joining the campus Jewish Student Center.

After 10 years in the position, Goldstein retired this week as head of the group. He has been a go-getter from the beginning. He stood up for civil rights as a young rabbi in 1964, when Martin Luther King Jr. called on him to march with blacks and other rabbis through the streets of St. Augustine, Fla.
