Flynn 1st Recipient of Water District Award

Ventura County Supervisor John Flynn was named the first recipient of the Richard V. Laubacher Water Conservation Award. The new honor, to be awarded annually, was created by the United Water Conservation District to recognize someone who demonstrates innovation and leadership in water conservation in agriculture, business or education. Flynn has served as chairman of the Fox Canyon Ground Water Management Agency and helped lead the Southern California Water Committee. The award is named after Richard Laubacher of Oxnard, who served on the United Water district board of directors from 1983-1996.
Cal Lutheran Committee Bestows Awards * Cal Lutheran University’s Student Life Committee selected Michaela Reaves of Thousand Oaks as its 1997 Professor of the Year and Veronica Garcia as Senior of the Year. Reaves is an assistant professor in the history department. Garcia is a double major in English and religion from Fresno.
$500 Goes to Schools’ Math, Science Programs * The mathematics and science programs at Rio Mesa High School and Charles Blackstock Junior High School were selected to receive $500 each by Brighter Horizons V, a technology conference for girls sponsored by the American Assn. of University Women. The conference committee established the award to recognize the high school and junior high or intermediate school that was represented by the most students. The conference was held in March and was sponsored by the Camarillo, Oxnard-Port Hueneme and Ventura County branches of AAUW.
35 County Organizations Receive Grants * Grants totaling more than $300,000 have been presented to 35 Ventura County nonprofit health and medical organizations by the Livingston Memorial Foundation. The foundation was formed in 1974 to carry out the will of Ruth Daily Livingston, the widow of Dr. W.R. Livingston, a Ventura County physician.
