$1-Million Blaze at Furniture Business

A blaze at the Arte de Mexico furniture showroom in North Hollywood destroyed about $700,000 worth of items Monday night, including antique wooden doors from India and about 50 finished pieces for theme parks and hotels.

Tuesday morning, city fire officials and business operators assessed the damage--which also included about $300,000 in structural damage--and searched for the fire’s cause, which is still unknown.

The fire, in the 5300 block of Riverton Avenue, was spotted about 7 p.m. Monday by city firefighters returning from a nearby false alarm on Magnolia Boulevard, said Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.
