A mother and two daughters died Saturday when their car crossed a freeway center divider and slammed into an oncoming tractor-trailer, tying up traffic for hours on Interstate 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
The highway remained closed for nearly 14 hours, with traffic routed to a nearby state highway.
Two other daughters survived, but one was in critical condition, said John Coldsmith, administrative supervisor at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs.
California Highway Patrol investigators speculated that Juana Jimenez-Carillo, 35, of Las Vegas fell asleep at the wheel. But the investigators have reached no conclusions, dispatcher Carol Martinez said.
