From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A jury has awarded $2 million to the family of a paper mill worker killed by co-workers after police released a tape of him tipping them off to a theft. Five Green Bay, Wis., police officers and the city of Green Bay were found negligent in the 1992 death of Tom Monfils, 35, whose family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. Monfils’ body was found in a two-story vat of paper pulp at the James River Corp. mill. Six co-workers were convicted of roles in the slaying, which led to a state law shielding the identities of police informants.
