New College Program Aimed at Busy Adults

Valley College will hold an orientation session Saturday for its new Program for Accelerated Education, a venture aimed at busy adults seeking a college education in a nontraditional setting.
Students completing the liberal-arts program will earn associate in arts degrees in five semesters by attending classes held one night a week and eight Saturdays a semester.
PACE Director Sandy Mayo said the program will enable students to prepare to transfer to a four-year college “within a reasonable time frame.”
Borrowing the words of one student, she said the program would “allow students to balance college with their other work and family obligations so that students did not feel the pressure to rid themselves of children and spouses in order to find time to study.”
Carlotta Tronto, dean of academic affairs, reported strong interest in the effort.
PACE courses cost $13 a unit. Students needing more preparation before starting may enroll in the PACE Bridge Program, which helps students acquire the necessary math and English skills.
