ALGIERS — Two powerful bombs exploded Thursday in separate attacks in Algeria, killing at least 18 people and wounding dozens more, hospital officials said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either attack, one of which took place in the capital, Algiers, and the other in the western port city of Oran.
In the capital, a bomb concealed in a package went off midmorning in the Casbah, an ancient walled neighborhood that is considered a stronghold of Muslim militants. At least eight people were killed and 22 others wounded, according to hospital sources. Most of the victims were reportedly shoppers and sidewalk hawkers on a crowded street.
Meanwhile, a car bomb exploded on the seafront in Oran, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens of others, hospital sources said.
Authorities had no immediate comment on the Oran bombing. The attack could not be independently confirmed.
