Local News Prizes: KCBS-TV Channel 2 dominated the initial round of 1997 Golden Mike Awards, announced Wednesday by the Radio & TV News Assn. of Southern California. KCBS prevailed in 13 categories, including best live news story, hard news series, investigative reporting and entertainment reporting. Its closest competitors were KCAL-TV Channel 9 with five Golden Mikes and KTTV-TV Channel 11 with four.
Taking ‘Responsibility’: Actor Christian Slater, 28, has issued the following statement after being sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail for a drug-induced brawl with police and others in August: “I have been acting since the age of 8, and I have been a celebrity a long time. And when you’re a celebrity you start believing you can act off the screen any way you want without consequence. Now I know that that is not the way I wish to live my life, and I’m ready to take responsibility for my actions.”

Another Lennon: Sean Lennon, the 22-year-old son of the late John Lennon, has signed a record contract with Grand Royal, the label owned by the Beastie Boys, with a debut album due in the spring. Beastie Boy Mike Diamond said Lennon met the group through the New York band Cibo Matto, with whom Lennon has played bass. Lennon also played guitar on mom Yoko Ono’s 1995 album “Rising,” and performed with her at a 1996 Tibetan Freedom benefit concert organized by the Beastie Boys. Ono is not set to appear on her son’s album.
Tanglewood Changes: Just a week after the angry departure of its artistic director, Tanglewood Music Center is undergoing some changes, as outlined by Boston Symphony conductor Seiji Ozawa. Among them: the addition of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Emanuel Ax and the Juilliard and Guarneri string quartets to the music academy’s faculty, and a new program involving guest artists from the fields of dance, opera, film and the visual arts.

Former Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Arthur Hiller has been named chair of the American Film Institute’s Center for Advanced Film and Television, succeeding Robert Rehme. . . . “Style & Substance,” a new sitcom starring Jean Smart as a Martha Stewart type, will air on CBS Mondays at 9:30 p.m., starting Jan. 5. . . . Although no charges have been filed, police in Rock Hill, S.C., say they are investigating a woman’s claim that actor Edward James Olmos sexually assaulted her at a motel in October. A lawyer for Olmos, 50, denied the allegations and claimed the woman, 38, had stalked Olmos and sought a financial settlement.
