The Deep South awoke to snow that sent cars careening into each other and forced airlines to delay flights. The storm deposited more than 2 inches in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, and 3 to 4 inches in eastern Tennessee before heading north up the East Coast. In Virginia, snow fell as hard as 3 inches an hour, leaving 5 to 10 inches in some areas. Up to 18 inches of snow was forecast overnight for the hills of eastern Kentucky, northern West Virginia and central Pennsylvania. In Atlanta, a nine-car pileup tied up a section of highway for hours. Wind up to 45 mph across Florida hampered efforts to clean up tornado damage near Haines City, authorities said. Saturday’s tornado caused an estimated $5 million in damage.
