Francois Furet; Historian Wrote About French Revolution

Francois Furet, 70, French historian who challenged Marxist views of the French revolution. A onetime member of the Communist Party, he quit the party in 1956 to protest the Soviet Union’s action in crushing the Hungarian uprising. Several books followed in which he took a centrist view of the French revolution. In 1995 he wrote “The History of an Illusion: An Essay on the Idea of Communism in the 20th Century.” In Toulouse on Saturday of a head injury suffered while playing tennis.
