Sherman Proposes Sex Offender Hotline
Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) has introduced a bill that would establish a national hotline people could call to learn whether a person is a registered sex offender.
Sherman believes the hotline, modeled after a similar service provided by California’s state government, would be another tool parents could use to protect their children.
Sherman, whose district includes parts of the Conejo Valley, said his Child Protection Act of 1997 would build upon the so-called Megan’s Law that was passed in reaction to the murder of 7-year-old Megan Kanka.
Megan’s Law requires states to implement some form of notification when a registered sex offender moves into the community. California now allows members of the public access to a database of sex offenders.
The bill has received bipartisan support, including from Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley).
