Immigration Bill

* It’s unfair of The Times to quote opponents of immigration reform (Sept. 1) characterizing me or the landmark illegal immigration reform law without giving readers an opportunity to hear the facts from the author of the legislation.
The new law won overwhelmingly bipartisan support from Congress and the president last year because it secures America’s borders, reduces crime, protects jobs and saves taxpayers billions of dollars.
Polls show that legal immigrants support immigration reform in even greater percentages than do native-born Americans.
American interests are best served through policies that reward those who come to America to work hard and contribute and discourage those who come seeking a welfare check.

Chairman, House Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims
