Hawaiian Eye

Just hours before the Special Hawaii Issue (Aug. 24) landed on our driveway, my husband and three daughters and I returned from a paradisiacal 12 days in Hawaii. Regarding the story “Big Island Deluxe,” our message for your readers is: Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, so go judge for yourself!
We agree the Mauna Kea beach is the most beautiful on the Kona-Kahala coast. However, to our taste, the hotel’s oversized concrete structure inhospitably towers over the sand beach. Its neighbor, Hapuna Beach Prince, similarly overpowers the serenity of its tropical setting with ‘80s-style hard-edge excess. Unlike the author, we preferred the lower-rise architecture of the Orchid at Mauna Lani Hotel (where we enjoyed dinner) and the environmentally symbiotic Four Seasons Hualalai (where we breakfasted).
We enjoyed visiting these exclusive watering holes. Meanwhile, we relaxed in a spacious, three-bedroom condo on a Waikoloa golf course for a fraction of the price!
