Mornings Will Seem a Little Sadder

I won’t soon forget sitting next to Jim at this year’s Rose Bowl game--his last Rose Bowl. Jim was befuddled when I told him I had my bags packed and was going to take a red-eye flight to Florida for the next day’s Orange Bowl, but only if No. 1 Michigan lost to Washington State.

As Washington State mounted a rally in the closing seconds, Murray turned to me and quipped, “They got a movie on that flight?”

There have been other great sportswriters: Red Smith, Grantland Rice, to name two.

But I didn’t grow up reading those guys.

I grew up reading Jim Murray.

Tomorrow mornings will never be the same.
