John O. Tynes, one of Placentia’s longest serving City Council members and a former superintendent of the Placentia school district, died Tuesday of respiratory failure. He was 81.
Tynes stepped down from the council in 1996 after serving a total of nearly 18 years intermittently since 1950.
“His contributions have been overwhelming regarding the youth to the community,” City Administrator Robert D’Amato said.
Tynes, at one time a teacher and coach at Valencia High School, worked for the school district from 1944 to 1979, the last eight years as superintendent. An elementary school in the city is named in his honor.
He is survived by his wife; sons John E. “Bud” of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Jake of Placentia; daughters Mary Higgins of Norcross, Ga., and Carol Sue Rickel of Tempe, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Placentia Presbyterian Church, 849 N. Bradford Ave.
Donations can be made to the John Tynes Valencia High School Scholar Athlete Fund, in care of Valencia High School, 500 N. Bradford, Placentia, CA 92870.
