‘Blade’ May Recoup Its Cost Bite

Because of pre-sale agreements overseas, New Line Cinema’s risk on the $45-million production cost of “Blade” has been reduced. Based on a strong opening weekend, domestic receipts may be enough to bring the vampire film a small profit.
The film’s second weekend should provide a better picture of its potential.
Last weekend’s other new arrivals--”Dead Man on Campus,” “Dance With Me” and “Wrongfully Accused”--seem unlikely to cover even their marketing costs. “Wrongfully Accused” has done some business abroad, but for “Dead Man” and “Dance,” domestic take would appear to be the end of the road.
