OCTA Has Big Plans for Federal Funds

The Orange County Transportation Authority on Monday earmarked $13.16 million in future federal funds--including $4.5 million to construct a four-mile beach trail in San Clemente--for six projects that improve local communities.
The funds, which will be distributed for use from 1998 through 2001, will pave the way for a new boardwalk linking Dana Point and San Diego. It will also create safe pedestrian crossings at railroad tracks.
Other projects the board of directors approved for funding include the construction of five Orange County gateways.
The proposal is to build two gateways, similar to city entrance signs, on the Santa Ana Freeway, two on the Riverside Freeway and one on the San Diego Freeway to let motorists know when they are driving into Orange County.
Additionally, $1.8 million was earmarked to construct a bike trail along abandoned railroad tracks that run from Tustin through Villa Park and Orange, ending at the Santa Ana River.
