College Park’s Future Discussed by Officials

Hoping to give south Oxnard an economic boost, officials have launched a series of meetings on improving county-run College Park.

Representatives from Oxnard College, local school districts and the city met at county Supervisor John K. Flynn’s office Wednesday to talk about the park’s future. One idea is to turn it into an “aquatic park” with a swimming pool, water slides, driving range and other amenities.

In the past, the city, college and county have bickered over how to make the park more attractive, Flynn aide Paul Chatman said. Some have suggested that it would be a good site for a minor league baseball stadium, while others have vigorously opposed the idea.

The ballpark idea did not come up Wednesday, Chatman said. He estimated that the water park project would cost $2 million to $3 million, adding that many details, such as how to raise the money, need to be worked out.
